The frozen meal program is offered as an alternative or supplement to the traditional hot meal program. Keep in touch with us through our Facebook page! NEW: Frozen meals! The main target groups for receiving Meals on Wheels are elderly persons, persons with disabilities, persons who are chronically or terminally ill and persons who are convalescing. The program is offered to the residents of the City of Cornwall. The meals are delivered by trained volunteers who provide a personal contact, a safety and security check as well as an interested daily visitor. The main purpose of the program is to help clients stay in their own homes longer and to prevent premature admission to Long Term Care facilities. Meals on Wheels is a non-profit, volunteer-based support service that delivers hot, nutritious meals to homebound citizens of Cornwall who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Learn more about how the City of Cornwall is responding to COVID-19. We kindly ask for everyone's patience and understanding as these new measures may increase delivery wait times. Volunteers are also using gloves and/or hand sanitizer between each delivery and all delivery equipment is thoroughly sanitized upon return to the Lodge. Volunteers who have travelled are not permitted to deliver for at least 14 days after their return date. In addition, all volunteers are screened (temperature taken and questions about current health and travel status). These changes allow us to practice social distancing as recommended by health officials while continuing to ensure that our clients get a check-in from volunteers. Stepping back 2 metres from the door, the volunteer will wait for the client to retrieve the meal. As such, volunteers will place client meals in a plastic bag to hang on the doorknob or place on a porch surface and knock/call the client as usual. We will be implementing contactless delivery measures to ensure the safety of all involved. We are receiving daily updates from the Ministry of Health and we are planning for our services to continue unless we receive direction otherwise. Meals on Wheels is continually monitoring the evolving situation related to COVID-19 and our priority remains the health and safety of our clients, volunteers and staff. Meals on Wheels Policies in Response to COVID-19 Help us keep this program strong by making a commitment to support Mizell. The financial support we receive from individual contributions, grants and businesses is important and greatly appreciated. Mizell must raise the remaining 20% each year. Our contract covers 80% of the program cost. Our nutrition program is funded via a contractual agreement with the County of Riverside Office on Aging. It’s one of the primary reasons that our clients are able to age in place and retain their independence and dignity. Our drivers are frequently the only person a homebound senior will see on a daily basis, making Meals on Wheels so much more than just a delivery service. During the holidays, each client receives a gift package of personal care items and we recognize birthdays, whenever possible. If a client has a pet, we also provide food for the animal through a special program in partnership with the Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Clients are asked to make a $3.00 contribution per meal. Every meal is delivered by a staff driver who is CPR certified, trained in signs of elder abuse and is able to connect our homebound clients to our Outreach Coordinator for referral to additional services. Mizell delivers approximately 800 meals each weekday to homebound seniors and communal meal sites that stretch from Whitewater to the Salton Sea.
